Best of Ontario’s Elementary Schools 2008 / 2009

Ranking the Ontario’s Elementary Schools 2008 / 2009

In this table, schools are ranked (on the left hand side of the page) in descending order (from 1 to 2735) according to their academic performance as measured by the Overall rating out of ten (shown on the right hand side of the table) for the school year 2008/2009.

Each school’s five-year average ranking and Overall rating out of ten are also listed. The higher the overall rating (out of 10), the higher the rank awarded to the school. Where schools tied in the overall rating, they were awarded the same rank. Where less than five years of data was available “n/a” appears in the table.

Not all the region’s elementary schools are included in the tables or the ranking.

Bad habit—–my daughter is biting her fingernails

I noticed  My daughter had been biting her nails for 1 month, At first  I thought my daughter’s new teeth are coming, so I didn’t pay attention, until one day I talked  with my friend about my daughter’s bad habit. She told me she has been chewing her nails for at least forty years even she is old, a horrible habit. you have to stop her ! I was shocked! how can I stop my daughter to bite her fingernails?

when I saw she chewed, I said: your hands have bugs, if you bite your fingers, you will have stomachache.”
it seems not work.  I thought of maybe there were some reasons? I noticed when I sent my daughter to the daycare (in the summer, some kids went to daycare was very late, my daughter always the first one) maybe she was nervous when she was alone at the daycare. so I changed sending time, and I asked her teacher to notice her: how often she bite her fingers. and I also sent my older son  to same daycare with my daughter . it worked! Her teacher told me : no more biting fingers.

Here some tips (sorry I copy from here ):

1.Explain to your child that people bite nails when they are scared or upset. Watch if he is biting his fingernails at certain times and places such as while learning new things or meeting new people. Encourage him to talk about what is bothering him to relieve stress.

2.Try not to nag your child to quit nail biting if it is just a habit and not a sign of distress. The extra attention from you encourages her to continue the habit and your constant reminder makes her more nervous.

3.Get into an agreement to reward your child if he abstains from biting his nails. It should be his conscious decision to overcome the habit for the deal to work. Give the child a gold star or a sticker to mark the bite free days and give a special treat at the end of the week.

4.Use physical reminders to help you child break the habit like taping an adhesive bandage over her nails or painting them. Enhance consciousness about the appearance of their nails.

5.Cut the child’s nails regularly and file them close. Children are naturally curious and restless. Frayed nails or rough edges prompt them to bite the nails making it a habit over time.

  • 2 kinds of District School Board in Toronto (TDSB and TCDSB)

For new Canada Immigrants, the schools categories always makes them be confused. When they searched out through searching engines such as Google, they might see different “District School Board” sites, and they might make mistake after they check the website information, for example: they want to apply A school, but they might get the school information is belongs to B which it is a similar school under another “District School Board”.

OK, let me try to clarify these mess, but I just give the info due to my personal experience : By now, I know there are at least 2 big and popular “District School Board”s in Toronto:

1: Toronto District School Board (TDSB)

    About the TDSB

The Toronto District School Board is the largest school Board in Canada and the fourth largest in North America. We have nearly 600 schools and serve more than 250,000 students each year.

2: Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB)

    Toronto Catholic Schools

A Long and Proud History of Service to the Community

The Toronto Catholic District School Board is proud to be a significant part of the fabric of publicly-funded Catholic education in the Province of Ontario. We serve more than 93,000 students in our 201 Catholic schools, and represent close to 475,000 Catholic school supporters in this city.

So don’t mix them, you might be looking for an adult high school which belongs to TCDSB, not TDSB, right ? double check now.

How to make bath time fun for kids?

Some kids like to take bath, some kids don’t like to bath. My daughter is two years old, recently she is very scary to take bath, you know she very liked to take bath before. But recently, when I took my daughter to the bath tub, she was very scary, she screamed, cried loudly and said:”I dont want to take bath!”

I am really confused, I don’t know why, maybe I should not take her to the swimming pool when her brother took a swimming class, maybe she saw the deep water and felt scary?

Later I decided to change some ways, when it is bath time , I said to my daughter:” It is splash time! “, I splash water with her in the tub and I put some toys in the tub, and I told a story about clear rubbit to her.  I saw she was exiting then, and seems she forgot that she was in the bath tub. then I continue to do like that, now, my daughter is happy to take bath again now.

AS mother I know it isn’t easy task for kids with bathing and  hair washing, when dealing with these issues, trying our best to make bath time fun. I am so happy I did it!

There is some Bath Time Safety Tips, I wish these tips can help you!

    1) Get a bathmat, the rubberized surface can help kids  to keep their footing on the slippery wet surface of the tub.

    2) Never leave a child under 6 alone in the bathtub.

    3) Keep razors, shampoo, and other bath needs out of reach.

4)Never put your child in the bathtub while the water is still running; the water temperature could quickly change.

5)Always run the cold-water tap first when filling a bath, then mix in the warmer water to reduce the risk of scalds or burns.

kids get the energy and get grow well they need food. As parents your job is just to offer right healthy food for your child’s age. It’s the child’s job to decide how much to eat.Don’t force a baby or child to eat. The children always know when they have enough, even babies.
